Club Brugge are back in the UCL proper after breezing through the qualifiers, brushing aside RB Salzburg before humiliating Rangers 9-1 on aggregate in the play-off round. Yet momentum has stalled domestically, with just one point from their last two league games [1D, 1L], a 1-0 defeat at RAAL La Louvière being the recent game. That adds weight to this opener, especially given Brugge’s daunting league phase schedule, which includes Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Arsenal. Home form could be a source of inspiration. The Belgians have lost only two of their last 17 European matches on home soil [11W, 4D, 2L] and are unbeaten in their last six outings here [5W, 1D], netting 18 goals in the process. The Blue-Black have also scored in 29 of their last 32 continental fixtures. Hans Vanaken—the club’s UCL appearance record holder [50]—has been pivotal, with FC Bruges unbeaten in his last eight scoring appearances [6W, 2D]. History leans slightly in their favour too, with the Blue-Black and Monaco sharing four previous European meetings [2W, 1D, 1L], including a famous 4-0 Brugge win in 2018/19. Key players Romeo Vermant and Ludovit Reis will miss the match due to injury and illness, respectively. The duo of Joaquin Seys and Hugo Vetlesen are also doubtful. Nicolò Tresoldi is expected at the attacking end of Nicky Hayen’s 4—2—3—1 formation.

Monaco will arrive with confidence after winning three of their opening four Ligue 1 matches [3W, 1L], most recently a 2-1 triumph at Auxerre. But their record on the road in Europe is troubling — just one win from their last 12 UCL away games [1W, 5D, 6L]. Even so, they’ve fared well in Belgium recently [1W, 2D] and tend to start campaigns positively, winning four of their last seven opening-day UCL fixtures. Goals are usually guaranteed with the Monégasques too, with only one of their last 70 European fixtures ending goalless. However, Les Rouge et Blanc may be vulnerable at the back, having failed to keep a clean sheet in their last six away matches. Philipp Köhn made three saves across his last two matches but failed to keep a clean sheet in each of his previous five UCL outings. Lukas Hradecky and Paul Pogba are ruled out, while Aleksandr Golovin, Ansu Fati and two others are in doubt. Adi Hütter is expected to opt for Folarin Balogun and Mika Biereth at the attacking end of a 4—4—2 formation.
