This will be the fifth competitive meeting between the two clubs, with their history stretching back to that famous night in September 1997 when Newcastle stunned Barcelona 3-2 thanks to a hat-trick from Faustino Asprilla. Since then, however, the Magpies have failed to beat the Catalan side, losing each of the subsequent three encounters. For Newcastle, this fixture is an opportunity to showcase their European credentials against one of the continent’s most decorated teams. The Magpies have faced Spanish opposition 11 times in major competitions, winning six and losing five, including victories in each of their last three such meetings. That record offers encouragement for Eddie Howe and his players, who know that the home crowd at St James’ Park can transform the atmosphere into something truly intimidating for visiting teams. However, Newcastle’s overall Champions League form has been patchy. They have managed just one win in their last eight outings in the competition (D3 L4), though that sole success was a memorable 4-1 triumph over Paris Saint-Germain during the 2023-24 group stage. Replicating that intensity and clinical finishing will be vital if they are to trouble Barcelona, who remain packed with attacking talent and experience on the big stage. A 4—3—3 formation with Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon and Elanga in attack is expected against the Catalans.

This is Barcelona's 30th campaign in the Champions League proper, a competition record they share with fellow Spanish rivals Real Madrid. They have featured every season since 2003/04. Barcelona will arrive in the Northeast with a formidable record against English opposition in Europe. They have won 12 of their last 16 Champions League matches against Premier League sides (D2 L2), averaging more than two goals per game in that stretch. The Blaugrana have often found a way to rise to the challenge against English clubs, though their most recent visit to England ended in disappointment, as they were famously humbled 4-0 by Liverpool at Anfield. They have only once before lost consecutive away games on English soil, against Arsenal in 2011 and Chelsea in 2012. Avoiding a repeat will be high on their agenda when they make their opening appearance in this season’s UEFA Champions League league phase. Robert Lewandowski, who scored twice in the 6-0 demolition of Valencia at the weekend, is expected once again at the attacking end of Barcelona’s 4—2—3—1 formation.
