Arsenal vs Sporting CP · Champions League
Arsenal FC return to Emirates Stadium holding a narrow but valuable advantage over Sporting CP as they aim to secure a place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive season. The first leg in Lisbon was decided in dramatic fashion, with Kai Havertz scoring a stoppage-time winner to give Arsenal a 1-0 edge. That result continued the Gunners’ outstanding European form this season, marking their tenth victory in 11 matches and reinforcing their credentials as serious contenders. Arsenal’s recent record against Sporting further strengthens their position. The North London side are unbeaten in their last six meetings with the Portuguese club, winning three and drawing three. Notably, they produced a dominant 5-1 victory in Portugal during last season’s group stage, with goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Havertz, Gabriel Magalhães, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard. Looking at the broader historical context, English clubs have dominated Portuguese opposition in the Champions League knockout rounds. The last ten two-legged ties between teams from these nations in the competition have all been won by English sides. Even more strikingly, all nine previous European Cup quarter-finals involving English and Portuguese clubs have been won by the English representatives. Arteta will be hoping to see his side extend the trend when they appear with a 4—2—3—1 formation with Viktor Gyökeres in attack against Sporting CP.

Sporting do have a positive memory in knockout football against Arsenal. The Lisbon side eliminated the Gunners in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League round of 16, progressing on penalties after a closely fought 3-3 aggregate draw. That experience could give them belief heading into this second leg, despite the current deficit. Sporting, by contrast, face a difficult challenge away from home. They are winless in their last ten matches in England, drawing five and losing five since their last victory back in 2005. While they have shown resilience with several draws, their inability to secure wins on English soil remains a significant hurdle. Form against Premier League sides also raises concerns for Sporting. They have won just two of their last 14 matches against English opposition, with both recent defeats coming against Arsenal. With Arsenal’s one-goal advantage, strong home form, and dominant historical record in this matchup, the odds are stacked against the visitors. Nevertheless, Sporting will be looking to do everything possible to overturn the one-goal deficit when they make Wednesday’s trip to the Emirates. A 4—2—3—1 formation with Luis Suárez in attack may be seen here.
