Newcastle and Barcelona meet once again in the UEFA Champions League as they face off in the round of 16 first leg. The encounter marks the second meeting between the sides this season and promises to be a fascinating clash between an ambitious English side and one of Europe’s most decorated clubs. Newcastle reached the knockout stage for the first time in their Champions League history after defeating Qarabağ FK 9–3 on aggregate in the knockout phase play-offs. Eddie Howe’s side produced an emphatic 6–1 away victory before completing the job with a 3–2 win at home. The Magpies had previously finished 12th in the league phase to earn their playoff spot. The two teams already met earlier this season at St. James' Park on Matchday 1. On that occasion, two second-half goals from Marcus Rashford secured a 2–1 victory for Barcelona. Historically, the teams have met five times in European competition. Newcastle’s only victory came during the 1997/98 Champions League group stage when Faustino Asprilla famously scored a hat-trick in a dramatic 3–2 win. Newcastle’s home record against Spanish clubs has been respectable. They have won five of their eight home games against Spanish opposition, though they have also suffered three defeats. The Magpies will hope their strong European home form continues, having lost only two of the home legs in their last 32 European ties while winning 22. A 4—3—3 formation with Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon, and Harvey Barnes in attack may be seen against Barcelona.

Barcelona, meanwhile, qualified directly for the round of 16 after finishing fifth in the league phase. The Catalan giants continue their remarkable consistency in Europe, reaching this stage of the competition for the 20th time. Under manager Hansi Flick, the club has once again demonstrated its ability to compete at the highest level of European football. The Spanish giants have won 15 of their last 16 Champions League round-of-16 ties and have been particularly effective against English clubs at this stage, winning their last five such matchups. They have also won ten of their fifteen two-legged ties against Premier League opponents in the competition. One player who could make history in this tie is Lamine Yamal. At just 18 years and 240 days old, the Barcelona prodigy could become the youngest player to reach 30 Champions League appearances, surpassing the current record held by Warren Zaïre-Emery. A 4—3—3 formation with Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal, and Marcus Rashford in attack may be seen against Newcastle.
