Pafos FC vs Slavia Praha · Champions League

Pafos welcome Slavia Praha to Cyprus on Matchday 8 of the UEFA Champions League league phase with their debut campaign hanging in the balance, knowing only a victory will give them any chance of extending their historic run into the knockout rounds. The Cypriot champions begin the final round 30th in the standings on six points, while Slavia Praha are already eliminated, sitting 34th on three points. Momentum, however, is not firmly with the hosts, who arrive having lost their last two matches. Even so, Pafos retain hope, particularly given their strong home record in Europe and the struggles Slavia have endured throughout the campaign. This fixture represents new ground for both clubs. It is the first competitive meeting between Pafos and Slavia Praha, Pafos’ first encounter with Czech opposition, and the first time clubs from Cyprus and Czechia have faced each other in the Champions League proper. Despite recent setbacks, the numbers offer encouragement. A narrow 1-0 loss at Chelsea on Matchday 7 was only Pafos’ third defeat in 13 Champions League matches this season (W5 D5), although it did mark a second successive loss. Overall, they have been beaten just four times in their last 19 European fixtures (W8 D7), and they are particularly strong at home, losing only one of their last ten European matches on Cypriot soil (W6 D3). Anderson Silva is expected at the attacking end of Pafos’ 3—4—2—1 formation. João Correia is suspended for this fixture.

Pafos FC vs Slavia Praha · Champions League

Slavia Praha, by contrast, arrive with little to play for beyond pride as they look to bow out of the competition. This is their third Champions League proper campaign, following group-stage eliminations in 2007/08 and 2019/20, and they have now gone 18 matches without a win at this level (D7 L11), last tasting victory in September 2007. Their 2-4 home defeat to Barcelona on Matchday 7 extended a winless European run to 14 games (D5 L9), though it did at least end a five-match Champions League scoring drought. Slavia’s only previous experience against Cypriot opposition came in the 2017/18 qualifying play-offs, when they were eliminated by APOEL following a 2-0 defeat in Nicosia and a goalless draw in Prague. Meanwhile, with Pafos motivated by history and Slavia seeking a rare positive note, the final matchday promises tension, urgency and the possibility of another memorable European night in Cyprus. A 3—4—2—1 setup with Tomás Chory in attack is expected against Pafos.
