Third-placed Bayern München [WWWWL] return to Munich looking to refocus after their perfect Champions League start was halted in a 3-1 loss to red-hot Arsenal on Matchday 5. Bayern’s record against Sporting is famously brutal. Their last meetings came in the 2008/09 knockout stages, where Bayern produced the biggest aggregate win in Champions League history: a 12–1 demolition across two legs. They had already beaten Sporting in previous group-stage meetings, and across all four historical matchups Bayern have scored 13 times and conceded just once. That dominance reflects a wider trend — Bayern have lost only two of 31 games against Portuguese opposition and remain undefeated at home against teams from Portugal (13 wins and 2 draws). Bayern, however, are not arriving in total cruise control. Their loss to Arsenal on Matchday 5 stopped what looked like a comfortable march to six wins from six. That defeat was only their fourth across their last 53 group-stage or league-phase matches, but it showed they can be punished when their back line is exposed. Still, Bayern’s home record remains monstrous: unbeaten in 36 home matches in this phase of the competition, with 34 wins and just two draws since 2013. They simply don’t drop points in Munich. Harry Kane remains their headline threat. With 16 goals in just 15 home Champions League appearances for Bayern, he continuously delivers when the lights are brightest. He’s already scored three in Munich this season and is likely to test a Sporting defence that has been far from watertight in Europe. The Englishman is expected at the attacking end of Bayern’s 4—2—3—1 formation. Luis Díaz remains suspended following a red card on matchday four.

Sporting [WLWDW], in 8th, have struggled badly on German soil. They’ve lost 14 of their 17 away matches in Germany, their only victory coming just two years ago at Eintracht Frankfurt. Their most recent knockout encounter against a Bundesliga side ended in elimination to Borussia Dortmund, without scoring across both legs. Sporting’s hope lies in their recent ability to score. They’ve found the net in 21 consecutive European matches and have opened the scoring in four of their five league-phase games so far. If they can draw first blood yet again, they might force Bayern into a more open game than they’d like. However, history, form, and home advantage overwhelmingly favour the German champions. Sporting may have the confidence to attack, but Bayern rarely offer charity in their own stadium. Expect goals, pressure, and a Bayern side determined to close the group stage with authority. A 4—2—3—1 formation with Suarez in attack is expected.
